NJ Lowering Minimum Passing Score on H.S. Graduation Test

School Districts Nationwide Are Lowering Standards

Instead of lowering standards and passing test scores we need to reform education to have kids do better.

The disease of public education is that every year we spend billions of dollars more than the year before yet kids' reading and math scores are plummeting.

Don't think this is because of the pandemic: NY's average percentage of children in 4th Grade who could read at grade level – or even one year behind – wasn't even 32% ten years ago. It's only dropped even more after Covid lockdowns and remote learning. How low must it go before we insist on a correction? How long can we tolerate this substandard performance?

Here Jill Simonian covers a story for PragerU that NJ is lowering academic standards even more because only 39% of high school students in Jersey are able to pass the graduation test that's been the standard for a very long time.

This performance of our public education system is not acceptable. The answer is to force schools to perform better, and not make it acceptable to be unprepared for life.

The teachers' unions – and all education unions – are fine with this unacceptable and substandard performance. Enough!

Education's Dirty Secret

Never mind the pandemic and lockdowns: public school performance has been a disaster for at least a decade - long before the lockdowns.

In NY nine years ago, as an example, the percentage of kids in 4th grade you could read at 4th grade level – or even a year behind – was barely 32%. That means less than one-third of 4th graders could even read at 3rd grade level.

Would You Fly An Airline That Crashes 68% of the Time?

Of course, not. That's unacceptable performance.

Would you allow a hospital to perform a routine operation if they told you that patients only survive less than 32% of the time? No way.

So how can we accept this horrible performance for our children?

The Teachers' Unions are the Problem

The NY Legislature in Albany is controlled by the teachers' unions. The same unions that negotiate against the State. The same unions that called for extended school lockdowns.

The teachers' unions fight any effort to bring merit into the system. With tenure, it's nearly impossible to fire bad teachers. This has to end.

We have to move to a merit system in public education.

The idea that no teacher can be fired has to end
Schools must aim for 100% of children reading and doing math at grade level
Raises must be based on merit and excellent performance
School choice is a necessity; only competition will push performance up
School reimbursements should be tied to performance. A school with 95% of kids performing at grade level would get 100% reimbursement. The amount of aid would decline if performance is lacking.

Our corrupt public education system is really heading south. The teachers unions are the biggest part of the problem: merit is out. Period.

What we need:

2. End payroll deduction of union dues. Why is the employer the collection agent to unions working against them?

3. Tie educator pay to student performance. Go back to 1950's tests to avoid dumbed down tests.

Despite the upset victory of Governor Glen Youngkin in VA over parent's rights in the education of their children, Congressman Eric Swalwell recently took the opposite position against parents. He wants the people running education into the ground to have absolute and total control. This is exactly what the Communists want here: indoctrination of American school children.

"Swalwell ... mocked the notion of parents making major decisions in the education of their children.

The California Democrat insisted that it is akin to 'putting patients in charge of their own surgeries? Clients in charge of their own trials?' Swalwell declared: 'Please tell me what I’m missing here … This is so stupid."

Parents get informed consent in both representation by their lawyers and in medical treatment. And, they're sick of the indoctrination and poor performance of public schools.

The dirty secret is that for at least eight years barely 32% of 4th Graders were reading at grade level – or one year behind! Educators don't announce that; they just need more and more money every year – a reward for failing performance.

Did parents have a say in performance that was unacceptable years before the Pandemic lockdowns? Wouldn't parents demand better than 32% of the class to be reading at grade level – or one year behind – if they knew the performance was that bad?!?

Would any parent put their child on an airplane if the airline said they only made it to the destination in one piece 32% of the time?

Would you let yourself be admitted to a hospital if they told you that patients only make it out alive 32% of the time? Why must parents accept this sorry, inexcusable performance.

The teachers' unions want amnesty for scores dropping even more! They say we need to recover lost ground. I assure you their recovery goal is to get back to 32%. They should be aiming for 100%.

It's time to TAKE ACTION and let your legislators know - whatever state you're in - that we want to take back education and require that 85% of union dues go to member benefits. No more tens of millions in campaign contributions to radical, communist-leaning candidates. And, no more payroll deduction of union dues.
